Picture Perfect Pooches: Tips and Tricks for Capturing Your Dog's Personality in Photos
I’m a portraiture artist who draws from your photos. After drawing 600+ pet portraits, I’ve gathered my best tips for taking photos of your loved one. These days most phone cameras work wonders, so there’s no need for a fancy camera! Check out these tips before you decide to take a few snaps:
Use natural lighting
Photos taken outside work the best. If this is not possible, try to take a pic inside near a window. Avoid using a flash as it can create red-eye and look harsh.
Get close
Think about whether you would like the whole body or just the head and shoulders in the photo. Get nice and close to snap a pic, to ensure that all of your pet’s beautiful details are captured.
Capture their personality
Try to capture your pet's unique personality by taking photos of them doing what they love, whether it's playing, chilling, or sleeping!
Keep it simple
Avoid busy backgrounds and instead keep the focus on your pet by using a simple and clean background. Leave toys and dog clothes out of the photo.
Strike a pose
Got a furry friend who won’t sit still? Ask a friend or family member to take a photo of your pup while they sit before their dinner. Sleeping photos also make for gorgeous portraits.
Take a selfie
If you would like a portrait of you with your dog, feel free to take a selfie! Selfies of you and your pet can turn out really well as a drawing. Just try to follow the above tips and snap away.
Once you have taken your photos, feel free to send a few photos through and I can let you know which one/s will work the best for your pet portrait! You can send your photos to:
